Anglo American Chewing Gum company

If you are wondering about the Anglo American brand, it was acquired as the Anglo American Chewing Gum company in 1929 by an English confectionary company famous for their toffees, Mackintosh. This enabled them to pre-empt any US chewing gum incursions into the UK. Mackintosh had a strong presence in New Zealand in the 1960s, so that’s why we had their sub-brand of bubblegum.

Professor Auguste Piccard
Professor Piccard was born
in Basle in 1S84. He served
in the Swiss Air Senvice in
1915 and became interested
in ballooning. This led to
the invention of an airtight
gondola with which he
reached a height of 16,940
metres in 1932. Applying
the same principles of pres-
sure-balance he later de-
signed and construted a
bathyscaphe in which he
descended to the depth of
13,000 ft. off the coast of
Dakar in 1954.

Professeur Auguste Piccard
Le professeur Piccard est né
à Bâle en 1S84. Il a servi
dans le Swiss Air Senvice
en 1915 et s'est intéressé à
l'aérostation. Cela l'a mené
à l'invention d'une nacelle
étanche avec laquelle il atteint
une hauteur de 16940 mètres
en 1932. Appliquant les mêmes
principes d'équilibre des pres-
sions il a plus tard conçu et 
construit un bathyscaphe dans
lequel il est descendu à
la profondeur de 3962
metres au large de
Dakar en 1954.

Petites imprécisions sur la fin du texte :

   - Piccard quitte le projet FNRS3 en 1952, le FNRS3 commence ses tests à l'été 1953.
   - les 4,050 metres (13,000 feet) atteint dans l'atlantique au large de Daker le sont par le FNRS3 le 15 février 1954, avec Houot et Willm à bord.

Le 30 septembre 1953 : Plongée du Trieste à 3 150 m au large de l'île de Ponza (Italie). C'est la dernière plongée du professeur Auguste Piccard à bord de son invention.

  • Attention aussi à un quasi homonyme Jacques Picard (biologiste marin assistant du Professeur Jean-Marie Perez) qui plonge avec le FNRS3 à 5 reprise, puis 2 fois avec l'Archimède.
  • Le FNRS3 plongera à Dakar de janvier à avril 1954, offrant à Théodore Monod une revanche sur le FNRS2 qui le mena à ... 25 m ! En 1954 il réalisera 2 plongées : 750 et 1400 m
